Ender´s Game, by Orson Scott Card
Reread this book after reading it for the first time in 1991 or 1992. I knew what the punch line was but i thoroughly enjoyed reading it again.
The Bible, by God
This is a Book which contains the Universal Truth, which lights up the way, in this world, to go to the next. Its also incidently very practical. Love your neighbour, help the poor, don´t lie, don´t steal, etc. etc.
Indaba my Children by Credo Mutwa.
The book is one interwoven tale of folklore, and history of mid- and Southern Africa, it is just too astonishing, I feel like I understand my fellow South African's a bit better now. The tale starts with the Great Spirit who is mother of all good things, and then there is the wicked emperor (father of all tokoloshes), representing all that is bad. But then it gets interesting. Customs of marriage, initiation, adoption, burial, war, peace - they're all to be found in between the long neverending story, and that's what I find so fascinating, because these are things we don't understand of the Blacks in SA. I don't even know how much of this book is true and how much mr Mutwa created, seeing the reputation he has. (just google it). But still, I recognised the places, the tribes, and the characters in the book, and it made Africa sound so much closer, if only for a week.
The Dune Series
Consists of five novels: Dune, Dune Messiah, Chilfen of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune. I didn't read Chapterhouse: Dune. Aparently that was the last one Frank Herbert wrote before his death. This series definitely beat The Lord of the Rings, which isn't even on my top titles list. I just found the fact that the story stretches over thousands of years, with characters that to me became more real than real life... Paul Artreides became the ultimate man. The spice, the Bene Gesserit, the Tleilax, genius.
Memoirs of a Geisha
[my comments still coming]
Maiden Voyage by Tania Aebi
If she can do it, so can I, figuratively speaking..
Losing my virginity by Richard Branson
I must admit I was inspired by this book. I bought it for my dad so that he could be inspired too, but he hasn't read it. Its in his book shelf though inbetween Selous Scouts and an old South African history textbook of Unisa.
Mbokodo - Inside Mkonto weSizwe
Twala Mwezi spent 15 years being shunted around between ANC camps in Angola, Tanzania, Mozambique after joining Mkontho weSizwe to fight in the struggle against apartheid. What did he get for this sacrifice? Four years in Quatro camp - the most feared torture camp of the ANC after being labeled as a dissident, and not able to even once cross the border into SA to fight for his ideologies. I was a child at the time that this story takes place, and thankfully for me, people like him did not wreak war in SA. So by some strange coincidence the ANC actually helped keep the situation in SA during the eighties stable, through their own corruption and incompetence, but my heart breaks for a person who was failed by his leaders. Those self same leaders who gladly offer someone else's life for their own political ambition. Sadly Mwezi died of aids a few years after returning from exile in 199X.
The Happy Isles of Oceana by Paul Theroux
Enjoyed this one thouroughly, the history of the islands, mingled with Theroux's current day comment. I sometimes wondered if he was making it all up, it seemed to fantastic that he could be paddling between the islands. Made me want to take up sea kayaking and elope for a year.
The truth about bars in Leiden. All pictures taken by Antonio.
Barrera: older crowd, bit rough around the edges.
L'Esperance: you will often find people standing outside the cafe here making it look like the hang, but its not really the hang.
M'n Broer: Cosy little restaurant-cafe. Had a pleasant dinner here.
Re-spons: I think we paged through some Playboy magazines here that was available to patrons.
Roebels: Our first bar we ever visited in Leiden, real student hang, only gets busy after 11pm.
't Keizertje: Lets just say that this place put me off olives for ever.
Our favourite café: fresh air, easy access
Toegang Verboden: Had a very tasty cream cheese filled wrap here.
De Vriend - met here on a windy May day, sat outside. What can I say about a cafe that I only had a coffee at?
Burgerzaken - serves a killer hot chocolate, very nice big tables out in the front if you're lucky enough to get a spot. Unfortunately closes at like 17.00 or 17.30 on a Saturday.
